Here for a minute to say Hello

Joe and bro just went out to buy few things, so I have few minutes to sit here and post something, in between washing and getting camping gear ready.

We're having great time so far. Bro bought himself a bike, and we already had 2 nice long trips around the city, and... Yesterday we went down the Bow river with the canoe, and it was a BLAST!!! *s*.

The weather has been good to us so far, the forecast is not so bad as well, so we leave on our first camping trip early Tuesday morning. We'll drive to Vancouver, and visit the Island as well. We plan to be away for a week or 8 days. Not going to take the canoe with us at this time... We plan to have lots of bike rides around Vancouver and Victoria.

So I'll see you when we're back, probably around Wednesday, August 6, hopefully with lots of pics and stories to tell *s*. Hope everyone is having a nice summer. I'll have lots of catch up to do when my vacation is over...

The walk in the field... The storm...

While waiting for bro to get his a$$ here (20 hours to go), we went out for a walk. We took a route we know well, thinking it'll take us some 50 minutes. But... this time we continued in a field... and had to walk further to find a way back into the neighborhood (photo to the right was taken in said field). All in all, it took us 80 minutes. It's a warm day outside, but the breeze is cool, we had cold water with us... and we feel wonderful right now *s*.

Shining

And this photo was taken in our neighborhood this morning as well. Yesterday afternoon we had a storm that lasted some 15 minutes... The wind was blowing like crazy, dark clouds covered the sky, but no thunder, no lightning, no rain... nothing. After 15 minutes of crazy wind everything calmed down again, but when we went out we saw the damage of this dry short storm... This huge tree fell down. It's a good thing it didn't hit the house right beside it... but still - it's so sad...

All ready and anxious

We had few "hard working" days, getting ready for my brother's visit. Actually, we needed to do a serious spring cleaning... you know, the whole deal: windows, closets, the basement... Hours of slaving on the house - stuff I hate with passion, but know I have to do.

But hey, the house is all clean, smells nice, and we are READY!!!

Peaceful moment

And in between, we've found some time to go out for a bike ride. The city is so beautifully decorated with summer flowers... The grass is green and fresh everywhere, and the sunsets are spectacular these days.

Summer vacation feeling is one of my most favorite feelings these days. And knowing that my little bro will be here in 36 hours - priceless!!! *s*.

Wonderful news!

That's right. I've got wonderful news... My brother will come for his annual visit 2 weeks earlier than he planned. He'll be here next Tuesday, July 22nd, and will stay for 6 full weeks. Yay!!! I'm so excited I might burst *s*.

Joe will start his holidays tomorrow, Wednesday. That gives us few days to get ready for bro's visit. And meanwhile, we're riding our bikes around the city, checking nice interesting paths.

Under... and through...

My gym membership ended yesterday, and since bro is getting here , I saw no use to waste money on prolonging the membership, especially when I won't have time to use it. We'll be busy enjoying the outdoors here in the city, and hopefully even further! As you can see from the photos, there are lots of gorgeous places to see in Calgary, it's beautiful out there in summer time, and we're going to have a blast!!!

Floating away
Mosh... That's a promise!!! *s*.

Who doesn't love fireworks?

Every day of the 10 Stampede days ends with a spectacular show at the Grand stand. Music, dancing, singing - all telling the story of the past, present and future Canada. Hundreds of participants - all age groups - working their butts out to make this show a real grand one.

The evening starts with the chuckwagon races, which is a great event on its own, and later a huge stage is being rolled in, a real live orchestra is playing, and the show begins. Fireworks are an integral part of the show all along, but it ends with lots of them. Calgarians know that, so about an hour and a half before the show ends, you can see lots of people heading towards the Stampede park, camping anywhere they can around it, getting ready to watch the fireworks.

Let there be light

Cars park on traffic islands, on sidewalks, in the middle of the road sometimes... The cops won't give anyone a ticket at that time. They're very understanding and patient. They just know people can't resist this deep demanding need to watch the fireworks... again and again.

First try for Joe to take photos of fireworks. It ain't easy, not at all... and we'll try again in the next few days. After all, today is

Blast
only day 4 of the Stampede. 7 more days to go, and the fun is at its peak! *s*.

Calgary's Stampede is on its way

Every year, on the first Friday of July, the Calgary Stampede starts with a colorful parade along downtown streets, and the whole event lasts for 10 days. Calgary is filled with tourists who come here especially for the Stampede. It is a celebration of the old ways of the west, the first days and lifestyle of the country in general, and Alberta in particular. It is called The greatest outdoors show on earth, and not for nothing!

Peter Fonda at the parade

What does the Stampede mean? Rodeo, one of the biggest in North America (with prices of 50,000$ for the winners), chuckwagon races, evening show at the grand stand featuring the talents of The Young Canadians and an exciting fireworks display, popular country performers, Agricultural and livestock show, fair rides, lots of food stands... and much more. If you come into the Stampede park at 9 am, and try to sample as many activities as you can, you'll leave it at midnight very tired, and still, you won't see it all! Parade float

Those pics were captured from the local TV broadcast of the Stampede parade this morning. See the guy up there? That's Peter Fonda, who came to participate at the parade this year. And so were many other delegations from around the country, and many from the states and other countries as well. Calgarians round up along the parade route very early in the morning to have a good spot. They say there are around 250,000 people (at least) watching the parade every year. Yeap, and yours truly lives very close to it all *s*... Remembering the old west lifestyle

The Calgary Stampede means being proud of the past, having lots of fun in the present, and preserve history for the future.

Happy birthday, USA Oh... yea... Happy 4th of July to all who celebrate today.

Life's bits and pieces

So yesterday, Canada Day, we hopped on our bikes and rode to downtown to see the day's activities. All Calgary was on Princess island... at least it felt this way. So many people walking around, standing in line at the food stands, watching the performances (even belly dancing), riding their bikes, getting a tan... just having fun. The photo to the right was taken at downtown... by just looking up... Looking up

Last weekend we had a short trip to Carseland weir, some 50 minutes drive southeast of Calgary. Another beautiful provincial park I've never been to before. The Bow river gets very wide before he falls over the weir, and there are lots of islands there, and many kinds of birds around. We've found a great place to put our canoe in, so we're going to try it when my brother gets here next month. Carseland weir

We were playing with shadows and light one night this week. I'm in need of few photos for the redesign of my site, so we played with the digital. Our living room was totally dark, and the only source of light was outside in the street. We got some nice silhouettes that night, and here is one...

Some bits and pieces of my life - summer 2003.

Happy Canada Day

Canada celebrates its 136th birthday today. So to all of you who are Canadians,

Canada's 136th Birthday

FlagFlagFlag

Happy Canada Day!

Don't you think it's about time I learn to sing the Canadian national anthem??? After all... I live here now. It's strange, but I can hardly connect to it yet. Somehow, deep inside... it's not my national anthem... yet...

I remember last year, when we went to the grand stand's show in the stampede... Before the races, everyone stood up and sang the national anthem. It was exciting to listen to it... even my brother said he felt emotional. Maybe it was the grand singing of thousands of people, I don't know...

Maybe one day, I'll be able to relate and feel close to those symbols of my new... hummm... country.

O Canada!

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
