We visited the ghost town of Nordegg, Alberta, Canada, on October 8, 2004. The place is open for tours from mid - May until late September - early October. When we got there, their office was already closed, and there were no official tours anymore... so we decided to drive/walk around the area, and see what we can find. There are few people still living there today, and there are plans in motion to develop the place as a tourist attraction.

So we were on our own, walking around without seeing another living soul, praying that there are no bears in the area *s*. From a distance we saw people working on the entrance of the old mine, so we kept away from this area. But... there's so much to see there... lots of bits and pieces of the past just laying around... and that's what we're going to show you - and share with you - on this series. Today we post the first 8 photos, and in the next few days we'll add more. Enjoy *s*.

Did you know that there are over 29,000 glaciers in Canada? We didn't. Well, we sure knew there are lots of glaciers siting on top of the Rockies... but 29,000??? Wow!!!

When we drove the Icefields parkway (highway #93 from Jasper to Banff) two weeks ago, we saw lots of glaciers (some of them a mile thick). After passing the Bow lake, we stopped at a road turnout looking towards the Crowfoot mountain and glacier. It was a gloomy gray hour, but the glacier was very obvious, and one could see the ice, shining with a bit of bluish - graying shades. It was a wonderful sight!

The name Crowfoot was given to the glacier because years ago it had the shape of a bird's foot, with three toes coming down from the mountain. Since then, this glacier (and many others) has receded considerably due to the global warming, and one of the "toes" is long gone.

It's so beautiful. Yet sad. I don't think most people realize how much of nature is being lost each year due to global warming.

What do ya know... It's SNOWING here! First snow for winter 2004, and the whole world is turning into winter wonderland. Big fluffy snowflakes coming down so slowly... so quietly... I just LOVE it! And it's -4C outside. Not so bad, though. We went out for a while, and it felt ok, so we snapped few shots. Winter photography is officially starting today s*.

You know, John... Summer here in Calgary is quite short... something like 5 months. I'm happy to say this summer we had a wonderful use of this short time... we traveled and saw a lot... so I'm not surprised it's almost gone ;-))

I know what you mean, Tine. I come from a country where I never experienced snow before. That's why I find it so enchanted and magic.

Joe, on the other end... doesn't like the discomfort snow put on us sometimes... but likes to take photos of it :-))

Remember our day trip to Nordegg a week ago? No, the ghost town photos aren't ready yet, but... From Nordegg we drove on the David Thompson Highway towards the west, and for the first time we saw the huge manmade Abraham Lake. Its breathtaking turquoise color is caused by glacier movement that erodes the rocks and makes rock silt. The rock silt is then carried down the mountains by the North Saskatchewan River which feeds the lake.

The second photo from this area shows the rock formation revealed to those who drive on this highway. Magnificent!!! *s*.
