We were lucky to meet Doug outside Sam's place a few minutes after we entered Rowley. He's one of the 4
people who still lives in town, and was happy to tell us about Rowley, showed us around and let us in to few of
the buildings. That was a really lucky day for us... Thanks, Doug *s*.
One of the building we were fortunate to see from the inside was Sams saloon. The building was built in 1920
and operated as a restaurant by Sam Leung - a Chinese cafe and butcher shop owner - from 1943 to 1968.
Sam Leung was a beloved, admired and respected man in Rowley. He served the town for almost three
decades. His backroom became the favorite hanging place for the guys, and the restaurant was the place
where the women spent time socializing.
Sam Leung retired in 1968 and died three years later up the road in Rumsey. For some, his passing and the
closing of his cafe signaled the coming of the ghosts in Rowley in the 70s... for the first time.
In 1980, Sam's old place was reopened for a town homecoming, but this time it wasn't a cafe, but "Sam's
Saloon." Nowadays the place is still open in summer time, and every last Saturday of the month people from
around Rowley come for a pizza night. We were invited to come, and we're planning to go back at the end of
May.
