Amazing Peyto • View from Bow summit, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
July 21, 2008 • By Joe

On the way back from Columbia Icefield (on the Icefields Parkway - highway #93 - which is the main north/south highway through the Canadian Rockies in Alberta), we had to stop at one of the gems of the Canadian Rockies - no other than the one and only Peyto Lake.

Access to the viewing area for this gorgeous lake and valley is right off the parkway. A short uphill walk from the parking area leads to the view point at Bow summit, and from there - down in the valley - Peyto Lake fills the sight. This turquoise lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and green forests. What a sight!!! It wasn't the first time seeing it for us - and it wasn't the last for sure!

The lake is fed from the glacier above it. The mineral content in the glacial water gives the lake its magnificent blue green color in the summer months. But, the light conditions in a certain day can change the shades of the lake. We've seen it wonderfully blue before... this time it was greenish.

No wonder Peyto Lake shows up on so many postcards and photo galleries... It IS one of a kind! I just wish there was a way to go down there, to get close to its shores. Maybe there is... we should find out the next time we'll visit. There will be next time - no doubt about that!
